American Idol is infamous for drawing the best and worst of pop star hopefuls. This season is no exception. Auditions held in Orlando, Florida, were mostly anti-climactic, except for the bedazzled beauty, Theo Glinton, who had a semi-decent singing voice, and the ultra-feisty Jarrod Norrell, who was led out by AI security and what looked to be an officer of the law. In his own words, before demolishing "Amazing Grace," Jarrod said he was "Givin' it up to God." Wonder what the Big Guy thought of that? Unfortunately for Theo and Jarrod, neither will be the next American Idol.
The best auditions of the day were Matthew Lawrence (who used silicone molds for resin for his suit), Seth Rollins, Jermaine Purifoy, and Shelby Dressel. All come equipped with touching back stories and have the chops to not only make it to Hollywood, but make it in Hollywood. I'm also intrigued by the raspy rock vocals of Kasi Beckford. Although she isn't as polished as some of the others, I think she has the potential to go far in Hollywood.
The show wouldn't be complete without a few wasted yes votes. Unable to break the Desimone sisters apart, Bernadette and Amanda will move on to the next round, as will "Split Boy," and the super sweaty beat boxer, Jay Stone. Those not mentioned were simply forgettable.
Addressing this season's choices for guest judges, I say, "What?" I'm not sure what the point of having Posh Spice judge a singing competition was, but it was lost on me. I vaguely remember hearing of her, during the reign of the Spice Girls, she wasn't chosen for the group based on her killer vocals, but for her enviable style. So I ask again, "What?" I will say that Shania Twain would make a perfect addition to the permanent judges table. Her professional credibility as a singer, songwriter, and entertainer, paired with her gentle bluntness, is just what the show needs in the wake of Paula's departure. But then, what would they do with Ellen? On a side note, was it me, or were Kara and Kristin Chenoweth a bit annoying?
Finally, I would be remiss not to mention the loss of Paula Abdul. Her loopy behavior aside, she added an element to the show that is now lacking. Without her, Simon just isn't his badly behaved and grumpy self. He's the guy we love to hate, except he's not doling out much hate-inducing material.
